Baku hosts 40th Session of the UNODC Sub-commission on Illicit Drug Traffic
From 12th till 16th of September 2005 Baku hosted 40th session of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) Sub commission on Illicit Drug Traffic and Related Matters in the Near and Middle East.
The Session was officially opened by the Deputy Prime Minister, Chairman of the State Commission on Combating Illicit Trafficking in Drugs, Mr. Ali Hasanov. It was attended by the Interior Minister, Mr. Ramil Usubov, Minister of National Security, Mr. Eldar Mahmudov, Minister of Justice, Mr. Fikret Mamedov and Chairman of the Azerbaijan State Border Service, Mr. Elchin Guliyev,
Addressing the audience, UNODC Deputy Executive Director, Director of the Division of Operations United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, Ms. Sumru Noyan thanked "the Government of Azerbaijan for hosting the regional meeting and for the excellent preparatory work". She also informed that the agenda of the Session included examination of the work aimed at combating illicit drug trafficking, both individually as sovereign States and collectively in partnerships along shared borders and across the broader region.
The Subcommission was established by the resolutions of the Commission on Narcotic Drugs and by the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC). The functions of the Subcommission are to coordinate regional activities directed against illicit drug traffic and to formulate recommendations to the Commission. The Subcommission reports directly to the Commission on Narcotic Drugs and meets annually for a period of four days.
The members of the Subcommission are: Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, Bahrain, Egypt, India, the Islamic Republic of Iran, Iraq, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Kuwait, Kyrgyzstan, Lebanon, Oman, the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the Syrian Arab Republic, Tajikistan, Turkey, Turkmenistan, the United Arab Emirates, Uzbekistan and Yemen.
