Azerbaijan learns from Swedish customs experience
Baku, 12 September 2006 - A delegation of Azerbaijan State Customs Committee officials and representatives from Presidential Administration, Cabinet of Ministers, Parliament, Ministry of Justice and UNDP is undertaking a study visit to Sweden's Customs Service from 11 to 17 September 2006. The 15-member delegation is led by the Deputy Chairman of the State Customs Committee of the Republic of Azerbaijan Mr.Asgar Abdullyev.
The purpose of the study visit implemented within the framework of the joint project of the European Commission (EC) and United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) for "Modernization of Customs Services in Azerbaijan" is to examine the experience of the Swedish Customs in implementation of the European Customs Code. In addition, the visit will contribute to identifying the changes required to the existing policies and procedures of SCC together with the Information Technology Implications for implementing the revised Customs Code for the Republic of Azerbaijan which is currently under the development.
The delegation will be received by the Chairman of the Swedish Customs and will have meetings with other Swedish government representitives.
The study visit will contribute to strengthening relationships between Azerbaijan and Sweden in the customs area allowing new perspectives on future cooperation between the two national customs organizations.
Funded by EC and implemented by UNDP, the one-year project was launched in January 2006. Aimed at modernizing the customs service in the country, the 900,000 EUR project envisages the upgrading of customs legislation in conformity with modern international standards, in particular the EU Customs Code, and support in improvement and implementation of the SCC strategy on the development of information technologies (IT).
