Azerbaijan and UNICEF sign Memorandum on mutual understanding

BAKU/18.08.05/TURAN: The Ministry of Economic Development (MED) of Azerbaijan and UNICEF signed a Memorandum on mutual understanding today. Mr. Farkhad Aliyev, Minister of Economic Development, and Ms. Hanaa Singer, Chief of the UNICEF Azerbaijan Office, signed the document.

The Memorandum will contribute to the implementation of the United Nations Development Assistance Framework (2005-2009) signed by the Azerbaijan Government and the UN Office in Azerbaijan. It stipulates to help Azerbaijan in implementation of the Millennium Declaration, sustainable development, poverty reduction and other important social and economic programs concerning children. One of the aims is to prevent children from being isolated from the society. The main directions of the cooperation on the Memorandum are as follows:

  • Preparation of the action plan for Azerbaijan on the Millennium Development Goals,
  • Implementation of the available public programs on social welfare improvement and preparation of a new sustainable development program,
  • Improvement of the monitoring of the Millennium Development Goals in Azerbaijan.
The Memorandum will be implemented within the UNICEF country program from 2005 to 2009. The five-year program of assistance to Azerbaijan totals $9.725 million.
