UN Day commemorated at Baku International School

Each year since 1945 on 24 October, the United Nations celebrates its birthday. This year the Organization marks its 60th anniversary.

On 24 October 2005, the UN Resident Coordinator in Azerbaijan Mr. Marco Borsotti was invited for the UN Day event at the Baku International School. The event brought together schoolchildren from 2 to 16 years of age representing countries of each continent of the globe.

In his opening remarks to the secondary school children, Mr. Marco Borsotti referred to the fact that "youth is probably the most sophisticated audience in terms of the way of addressing it, yet the most important, for young people eventually become a driving force of progress". He made a comprehensive presentation on the history, structure, principles, and functions of the United Nations as well as the UN activities in Azerbaijan.

The event continued with a special flag ceremony where all the schoolchildren were supposed to stick to a big world map hand-made flags of their own countries. All the participants received the UN-emblem souvenirs from Marco Borsotti.

The schoolchildren staged a musical inviting people of the world to live in peace and friendship. The musical was followed by an "international lunch" - parents of the children prepared the best pieces of national cuisines of the countries of children's origin.

Baku International school, a private non-profit institution that opened in September 1994, offers a high quality education in the English language for students pre-school (two years of age) through secondary (high school) graduation. The school's educational philosophy, which includes a personalized approach to instruction, leads to teaching for mastery.
