UNIFEM, OSCE and ABA CEELI jointly conduct Advocacy Skills Training

On March 27-29, 2006, UNIFEM project, jointly with OSCE and ABA CEELI organized a three-day Advocacy Skills Training in the Crescent Beach Hotel, Baku. This workshop was conducted for 45 representatives of NGO's working on gender issues addressing basic advocacy methodology. Members of UNIFEM-supported Coailiton-1325, as well as other representatives of civil society both from Baku and from the regions participated in this training. From the government, a representative of the newly-established State Committee on Family, Women and Children of the Republic of Azerbaijan participated in this workshop as well.

The training was conducted by the representatives of such three international NGOs from Central Europe and CIS as B.a.B.e (Croatia), Center Anna (Russia) and Environmental People Law (Ukraine).

The objective of this training was to build the capacity and knowledge of gender NGOs on advocacy methods and skills and enable them to create an action plan based upon an identified object tied to their mission and utilizing one or more advocacy method.

The first two days of the workshop was an intense training on the different advocacy methods including such topics, as Community Organizing, Coalition Building, Public Participation (including Social Monitoring and Public Hearings), Lobbying, Impact Litigation and Media Relations. The last day was focused on using one (or more) advocacy method to develop an action plan for an appropriate period.

After this training, all participants got sufficient skills as well as handout materials to conduct future advocacy campaigns on identified during the training specific topics.

UNIFEM's regional project, "Women for Conflict Prevention and Peace-building in the Southern Caucasus" aims to support the capacities of women to participate in the peace-building processes and maintains that women have a strong commitment to securing a long-term peace in the region.
