UNFPA - Azerbaijan and Western University Gender Research Center organize Summer School on Gender
On September 4-9, Genclik Youth Centre in Zagulba hosted a 5-day Summer School 2006 "Gender and Education" organized by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and Western University Gender Research Center. The initiative was aimed at stimulation of gender research activities in the country through introducing gender concept and its methodology for PhD/ master students, National Academy of Science professors, university professors etc. The school was conducted for 20 participants, qualified experts and trainers have been hired for teaching at the subject school to introduce the participants with contemporary methodological approach of gender studies.
The following topics have been covered during the school: Millennium Development Goals and sustainable development; theoretical and methodological basis for gender research, contemporary gender studies, history of women's development in Azerbaijan; gender approach to sustainable development; gender aspect in economy and employment; gender statistics, reproductive health and family planning, gender-based violence and human rights; gender aspect in Islam; social-psychological aspect of gender; gender stereotypes; gender in language and communication, gender in art and culture, gender and ICT and others.
Students from different Universities of Baku as well as from the regions: Nakhichevan State University, Lenkaran State University, Genja State Univeristy, participated in the summer school. Besides the intensive educational program evening agenda was also provided to the participants : national mugam soiree, literature soiree, movie night, etc.
The school was closed with the final session when the participants received the certificates and presented their own proposals on incorporation of gender perspective into their own research studies.
