UN Azerbaijan establishes Theme Group on Gender Equality and Women's Empowerment
On 6 April 2006 the first meeting of the United Nations Theme Group on Gender Equality and Women's Empowerment took place with the participation of representatives of UN Agencies in Azerbaijan, State Committee on Women, Family and Children Problems, Secretariat for the State Programme on Poverty Reduction and Economic Development of Azerbaijan Republic.
The UN Theme Group on Gender Equality and Women's Empowerment was delegated to strengthen the overall UN agencies' performance on gender equality by mainstreaming gender into all key policies and programmes; enhance UN coordination by undertaking joint UN programmes on gender equality; create venue for regular exchange of information and experience on on-going and planned activities, aiming to minimize duplication. The work of the Group will be facilitated by the UN Population Fund (UNFPA) in its capacity as a lead agency for the Millennium Development Goal 3 (MDG) - Promote gender equality and empower women.
Attended by the representatives of UN Agencies in Azerbaijan the Group meeting was opened by Ms. Anne-Birgitte Albrectsen, UNFPA Country Director for Azerbaijan. According to her promoting mainstreaming of a gender perspective in the design, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of country policies and programmes in all political, economic and social spheres, and further strengthening the capabilities of the United Nations system in the area of gender are crucial for the achievement of MDG 3.
The event continued with a presentation by Ms. Vusala Aliyeva, Chief Consultant of the International Relations Department of the State Committee on Women, Family and Children Problems, on "Gender Strategy in the Country: Achievements and Constraints". The presentation focused on current status of Azerbaijani women in decision-making and education as well as early marriages, their economic insecurity, violence against women, trafficking in women.
Another comprehensive presentation on "Gender Component in the State Programme on Poverty Reduction and Sustainable Development 2006-2015" was made by Ms. Gunay Mammadova, Gender Specialist of the Secretariat for the State Programme on Poverty Reduction and Economic Development. The auditory was briefed on the steps envisaged by the Government in the State Programme on Poverty Reduction and Sustainable Development for 2006-2015 in the direction of improvement of the status of women in the country.
During the plenary discussion the participants exchanged information on the activities focusing on gender implemented by each agency.
