Children's leadership school marks the UN day
"Fifty-nine years ago, the United Nations was founded as an instrument of peace, human rights and development. The world is a better place because of the United Nations." This is an excerpt of the United Nations Secretary-General's message on the occasion of the United Nations Day (24 October).
On the occasion of the UN Day, the Ombudsman of the Azerbaijan Republic, Ms. Elmira Suleymanova and the UN Office in Azerbaijan, in particular, Department of Public Information, held a special event in the premises of the Azerbaijan Child to Child Peace Network. The event brought together members of the Leadership School, embracing schoolchildren aged between 10 and 17 and functioning under the auspices of the Network, other children and women organizations.
Ombudsman Elmira Suleymanova opened the event with a brief introduction on the international observance of the UN Day and focused on globalization processes, affecting nowadays all the world countries, including Azerbaijan.
Chief of Public Affairs and Information Department of the UN Office in Azerbaijan, Fargan Abbaszadeh spoke on the United Nations history, structure, principles, functions as well as the UN activities in Azerbaijan.
In a question and answer session, the Leadership School members asked numerous UN and international relations-related questions. They also had an opportunity to test themselves in a quiz on the United Nations system as well as on the world geography. The most active participants received gifts from the United Nations Office in Azerbaijan.
