| Community participation in local health
Community participation is the process when people are enabled to be actively and genuinely involved in defining the issues of their concern, in making decisions on factors that affect their lives, in formulating and implementing policies, in planning, developing and delivering services, and in taking action to achieve change. So, community participation is an underpinning principle in carrying out health reforms at the district level. |

With this in mind, one of the introductory activities on community involvement and participation - community mobilization meetings - were organized in five Primary Health Care Reforms project pilot districts of Azerbaijan (Shamkir, Khacmaz, Sharur, Goycay, Salyan) in the first three months of 2003. The purpose was to increase the awareness of community members about community participation and involvement, community management and civic initiatives, to update them on current activities within the PHCR project and encourage community members to elect their representatives and form Community Health Councils, which are to become an integral part of district Health Care management. |
