Peace Day Commemoration with Displaced Children
On 21 September 2003 United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM) "Women for Conflict Prevention and Peace Building in the Southern Caucasus" regional project along with the United Nations Department of Public Information (UNDPI) and members of the National Network of displaced women visited Galagayin IDP camp situated in Sabirabad district of Azerbaijan. The purpose of the trip was to mark the International Day of Peace and announce the winners of "I Vote for Peace" children's painting contest held among displaced children.
An award ceremony brought together 24 winners and participants of the contest held among schoolchildren of eight schools for displaced children from the occupied districts of Agdam, Fizuli, Lachin, Jebrail and the town of Shusha.
Principal of Fizuli district School# 27 Ms. Ulker Huseynova's greetings were followed by a small puppet show and thetrical performance on the topic of peace opened the ceremony by displaced children. Ms. Patricia McFillips, Chief Technical Adviser of the UNIFEM project, and Ms. Gulshan Pashayeva, National Coordinator of the project, congratulated children on the occasion of the International Pace day and wished everybody peace and returning to their homes. Ms. Pashayeva awarded schoolchildren from three age groups with diplomas and certificates and prizes.
Some of the winners expressed their wish to say a few words on their understanding of peace. Ms. Maila Aliyeva is 10 years old and she is form Shusha. She very passionately declaimed a small poem written by her. For her "peace is tenderness. Tender attitude toward all people."
After the ceremony of awarding Chief of the Department of Public Relations and Information, UN Office, Mr. Fargan Abbaszadeh made a comprehensive presentation on the United Nations and UN peacekeeping operations in particular. The presentation was followed by a quiz on the UN and international peace in which the best schoolchildren were awarded with certificates signed by the UN Resident Coordinator Mr. Marco Borsotti as well as with UN souvenirs and books.
Three peace doves were released at the close of the event
