In April 21-27, 2008 Immunization Week will be conducted in Azerbaijan
In October 2005, the WHO Regional Office for Europe and several member- states conducted the first European Immunization Week. The goal of the European Immunization Week is to increase vaccination coverage by attracting attention to existing problems and increasing awareness of population on the importance of immunization. In 2008, the 33 countries are participating in the European Immunization Week initiative.
In 2007, Azerbaijan has joined the European Immunization Week initiative of the World Health Organization Regional Office for Europe. In the 2008, the European Immunization Week is being conducted during 21-27 April. The main goals of the Immunization Week in Azerbaijan are the following:
1. Strengthening epidemiological surveillance on diphtheria
2. Mop up vaccination, according to the routine vaccination schedule on the republic level and with focus on diphtheria, DTP (diphtheria- tetanus- pertussis) vaccine.
3. Preparation to Supplementary Immunization Activities on diphtheria among 16-years-old children in the whole territory of republic.
The World Health Organization, UNICEF, Vishnevskaya-Rostropovich Foundation are the main partners of the Ministry of Health for holding the Immunization Week in Azerbaijan. In frame of European Immunization Week Dr. David Mercer, WHO EURO officer on communicable diseases surveillance will visit Azerbaijan.
