GENERAL ASSEMBLY PRESIDENT TAKES STOCK OF UN REFORM PROGRESS
27 March 2006

New York, Mar 27 2006 - Following the hard-won creation of a new more effective Human Rights Council, the next priorities for the 60th Session of the United Nations General Assembly include reform of UN management, the Secretariat, and the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), according to the Assembly President.

Today, as we celebrate sixty years of our United Nations, we must recognize that the world today is very different from that of our founders.

The United Nations must reflect this new age, and respond to its challenges - including, first and foremost, the knowledge that hundreds of millions of people are left defenceless against hunger, disease and environmental degradation, even though the world has the means to rescue them.


UN SUMMIT TAKES ON TOUGH GLOBAL ISSUES
(New York, 6 September) Heads of State and Government arrive in historic numbers at the United Nations this month, with a once-in-a-generation opportunity to reach major decisions on ending poverty, promoting human rights, fighting terrorism and helping countries recover from deadly conflict.

The Largest Gathering of World Leaders to Be Held September in New York

On 8 July, 2005 a press briefing was held in the UN Office in Azerbaijan. The briefing was aimed at informing media representatives on the World Summit of world leaders to be held New York on 14-16 September 2005.
Opening the event, Mr. Fargan Abbaszadeh, Chief of Public Affairs and Information Department of the UN Office in Azerbaijan stressed the importance of the year of 2005 for the United Nations.


Members of the Executive Boards of UNDP/UNFPA, UNICEF and WFP visited Azerbaijan on 9-15 May 2005

How effectively do the UN Agencies cooperate in contributing to Azerbaijan's achievement of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs)? A 23-member mission of representatives of the Executive Boards (EB) of World Food Programme (WFP), United Nations Childrens' Fund (UNICEF) and UN Development Programme/United Nations Population Fund (UNDP/UNFPA) from 19 countries was tasked to find a response to this question during their visit to the country on May 9-15, 2005.
