AZERBAIJAN, UAE SIGN CO-OP PAPERS
Azernews, November 22, 2006
Azerbaijan and the United Arab Emirates agreed to cooperate more closely on Monday, signing 11 documents and a joint declaration after high-level talks between the two countries in Abu-Dhabi.
The deals, inked by government officials and ministers during President Ilham Aliyev's visit to the UAE, cover trade, taxation, the military, education, justice and sports. Under the declaration, the two countries committed to expanding political relations.
The agreements were signed after President Ilham Aliyev's broad and private meetings with his UAE counterpart, Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan.
First, the parties discussed economic issues. They expressed confidence that the
Azerbaijani leader's visit would bring dynamics to bilateral ties and create adequate legal framework.
During the two leaders' closed-door meeting afterwards, the parties underscored that the two counties have a lot in common and the need to capitalize on this proximity to advance economic relations.
The discussions also focused on the developments ongoing in the region as well as the Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict over Upper (Nagorno) Garabagh.
President Aliyev further met with the Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed al-Nahyan, a son of Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan. He said the president's visit to his country was quite important for political and economic considerations.
Afterwards, President
Aliyev held meetings with the heads of several companies and attended a business forum at the Abu-Dhabi chamber of commerce. The event, supported by the Economic Development Ministry, was attended by over 50 Azerbaijani businessmen engaged in the food industry, chemicals, finance and other fields.
On Tuesday, the Azerbaijani president became familiar with the world-famous free trade area (FTA) in the Dubai Emirate. Over 3,000 foreign companies operating here fully own their assets. Foreign companies operating in other Emirates can acquire only 49% of their revenues, while the rest is owned by Arab businessmen. The FTA has direct access to the sea.
On the same day, President Aliyev attended the presentations of large-scale projects being implemented in Dubai. The construction of buildings rising to 1,000 meters is included in these initiatives.

AZERBAIJANI ANSWER TO OIL GLUT: BATHE IN IT
International Herald Tribune, November 28, 2006
NAFTALAN, Azerbaijan: Outside this improbable spa in a remote part of the former Soviet Union, oil rigs bob on a hardscrabble plain of rocks, shrubs and rusting industrial equipment that could easily pass for a stretch of West Texas.
Inside, Ramil Mutukhov, a lanky 25- year-old, prepares to be pampered and preened, scrubbed and peeled in a bath of pure crude oil. He undresses, hangs his trousers and sweatshirt on a peg, pulls off socks and underwear and folds up a wad of brown paper towels. He will need those later.
