IRAN, AZERBAIJAN TO START PARALLEL POWER GRID OPERATION
Trend, November 24, 2006
Baku, 24 November: Azerbaijan and Iran have signed a contract on parallel operations of the two countries' energy systems from 1 December 2006. Azerbaijan will receive from Iran 600-700 kWh of electricity a month in the winter when there is a shortage of [electricity], and the same volume of electricity will be returned in the summer when there is a shortage of it in Iran, the president of the joint-stock company Azarenerji, Etibar Pirverdiyev, told a news conference at the headquarters of the [ruling] New Azerbaijan Party today, Trend reports.
The electricity will be supplied via the existing lines Imisli-Parsabad
(Azerbaijan-Iran) and Astara-Astara (Azerbaijan-Iran).
Pirverdiyev noted that the contract does not envisage payment for electricity received as it will be returned in the same volume as supplied. In 2007, Azerbaijan plans to import maximum 700m kWh of electricity from Russia, he said, adding that Russia announced that it would considerably reduce electricity supplies to Azerbaijan.
While earlier, about 300 MWh were supplied in peak hours at nights in the winter, in 2007, the amount of electricity supplies will not be higher than 60 MWh. And while Russia used to supply 100 kWh of electricity every month, next year the volume may decrease to 30 kWh a month, Pirverdiyev noted.

AZERBAIJANI ANSWER TO OIL GLUT: BATHE IN IT
International Herald Tribune, November 28, 2006
NAFTALAN, Azerbaijan: Outside this improbable spa in a remote part of the former Soviet Union, oil rigs bob on a hardscrabble plain of rocks, shrubs and rusting industrial equipment that could easily pass for a stretch of West Texas.
Inside, Ramil Mutukhov, a lanky 25- year-old, prepares to be pampered and preened, scrubbed and peeled in a bath of pure crude oil. He undresses, hangs his trousers and sweatshirt on a peg, pulls off socks and underwear and folds up a wad of brown paper towels. He will need those later.
