INDUSTRIAL TOWN TO BE CONSTRUCTED IN AZERBAIJAN NEXT YEAR
Sharg, November, 2006
The Ministry of Economic Development (MED) of Azerbaijan is planning to launch the construction of the first industrial town next April, Deputy Director of MED Business Department, Samir Nuriyev, said.
Nuriyev stated that the current delays are due to technical work and depends on the Turkish party, which assists with the project preparations. A Turkish consulting firm, EMAY, with support of Turkish international cooperation agency TIKA is currently developing a plan of the proposed industrial town. The document consists of 4 parts, and work on the three of them has been completed. The Ministry spokesperson stated that the final plan will be submitted to MED in December.
Nuriyev also emphasized that GTZ (German technical assistance firm) has already conducted a market survey. "The issue of project financing from the State Budget is under discussion and will be resolved in January. In April, the Ministry will begin the construction," Nuriyev stressed.
The construction of the industrial town is planned near the city of Sumgait, 51 km off Baku. The town area is expected to be 90 hectares (0.35 sq miles) with its possible expansion by extra 350 ha.
The industrial town will create 8,000-10,000 jobs and will be established within the framework of the program of cooperation between the Azerbaijani government and United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) for 2005-2010. In 2004, UNIDO evaluated the town project at $30 million.

AZERBAIJANI ANSWER TO OIL GLUT: BATHE IN IT
International Herald Tribune, November 28, 2006
NAFTALAN, Azerbaijan: Outside this improbable spa in a remote part of the former Soviet Union, oil rigs bob on a hardscrabble plain of rocks, shrubs and rusting industrial equipment that could easily pass for a stretch of West Texas.
Inside, Ramil Mutukhov, a lanky 25- year-old, prepares to be pampered and preened, scrubbed and peeled in a bath of pure crude oil. He undresses, hangs his trousers and sweatshirt on a peg, pulls off socks and underwear and folds up a wad of brown paper towels. He will need those later.
