BELIEVERS ENRAGED BY ANTI-ISLAMIC PUBLICATION
Azernews, November 15, 2006
A recent publication has sparked outcry from believers in Azerbaijan who see it as an insult to Prophet Muhammad.
The article by writer Rafig Taghi, "Europe and us", published in low-profile newspaper Sanat (Art) on November 1, was insulting to the Islamic faith, according to many pious people in the country.
The Azerbaijan Islamic Party (AIP) has issued a terse statement condemning the story.
Amid tensions, the Caucasus Clerical Office chairman, Sheikh Allahshukur Pashazada made a phone call to the editor-in-chief of the newspaper, advising him not to embellish the problem and apologize.
Residents of Nardaran, a stronghold of Islamic tradition located about 40 kilometers north of Baku, held a rally on Friday in protest at the article.
The former AIP chairman Alikram Aliyev, addressing the rally, accused Islamic parties of being indifferent to the incident.
During the protest, the settlement's residents pronounced "a death
sentence" to Rafig Taghi.
The protesters also blamed Sheikh Pashazada for what they described as tribalism, maintaining that the clerical leader is trying to cover up the writer's "crime" due to being from the same region as the journalist.
The law enforcement agencies have instituted criminal proceedings against those responsible for the insulting publication.
"We have summoned Taghi and the editor-in-chief Samir Sadagatoglu and officially warned them that the newspaper had to publish a retraction," First Deputy Prosecutor General Rustam Usubov told reporters on Tuesday.
The law enforcers also started a criminal case on charges of inciting inter-ethnic, racial or religious hatred. The violators may face a prison term of three to five years.
Taghi said there were no insulting views in his article, expressing astonishment at the developments.
"Prophet Muhammad was not insulted in the story. On the other hand, we don't live in a theocracy and freedom of expression and speech should not be strangled," he said.

AZERBAIJANI ANSWER TO OIL GLUT: BATHE IN IT
International Herald Tribune, November 28, 2006
NAFTALAN, Azerbaijan: Outside this improbable spa in a remote part of the former Soviet Union, oil rigs bob on a hardscrabble plain of rocks, shrubs and rusting industrial equipment that could easily pass for a stretch of West Texas.
Inside, Ramil Mutukhov, a lanky 25- year-old, prepares to be pampered and preened, scrubbed and peeled in a bath of pure crude oil. He undresses, hangs his trousers and sweatshirt on a peg, pulls off socks and underwear and folds up a wad of brown paper towels. He will need those later.
