BAKU HOSTS AZERI-MOLDOVAN BUSINESS FORUM
Azernews, February 28, 2007
Azerbaijan and
Moldova mulled avenues for economic cooperation, the business climate and liberalization of trade at a business forum in Baku on Friday attended by the top officials of the two countries.
Prime Minister Vasile Tarlev, who headed the Moldovan delegation, made a number of proposals at the event. Primarily, favorable conditions should be created for the free movement of human resources and goods. The Azeri-Moldovan commission on economic cooperation should look into the proposal, Tarlev said.
The premier said his country had the potential to cooperate with Azerbaijan in numerous fields, including joint development of the sugar production sector.
Speaking of hurdles in the way of furthering relations, he said cooperation is particularly inhibited by the absence of a direct air link between the two countries.
"I raised the issue during my meetings with President Ilham Aliyev and Prime Minister Artur Rasizada. I hope the flights will open as soon as possible," he said.
Tarlev said his government was conducting reforms to completely liberalize the national economy in order to improve the business climate in the country and make it more attractive for investors. "Moldova is taking steps to eliminate bureaucracy and other obstacles impeding business development," he added.
Azerbaijani First Deputy Prime Minister Yagub Eyyubov reiterated that there are vast opportunities for Azeri-Moldovan collaboration. He expressed confidence that after the inter-governmental commission meeting and discussions at the business forum, the two countries would work to achieve the goal.
The forum was organized by the Azerbaijan Ministry of Economic Development and the Azerbaijan Export and Investment Promotion
Foundation (AZPROMO).
Co-op deals
On Thursday, Azerbaijan and Moldova signed agreements on cooperation in finance, statistics, healthcare, geodesy (earth science), mapping, environmental protection and labor migration in conclusion of the joint commission meeting.
Azerbaijan and Moldova have signed about 40 documents so far.
Moldovan Industry and Infrastructure Minister Vladimir Antosiy, addressing the commission meeting, sought Azerbaijan's support for his country's entry to the NABUCCO project - a multi-billion pipe to take Caspian energy resources to world markets. He also suggested that Azerbaijan take part in a tender on exploring Moldovan natural resources. The two countries may also agree on transporting Azeri gas to Moldova in the foreseeable future, said Antosiy. He added that Moldova is interested in cooperating with Azerbaijan in electricity supplies, as it currently imports 70% of its power.
Deputy Prime Minister Eyyubov said Baku was ready to back these proposals as much as possible.

Aliyev congratulates nation on historic date

The Azerbaijani people celebrated national holidays in a rather low-key way during the Soviet Union times. However, after they asserted sovereignty and established an independent state upon the Soviet collapse in 1991, March 20-21 - the Novruz Bayrami (Holiday) marking the advent of spring - were officially announced holidays. President Ilham Aliyev has lately issued a decree announcing the celebration of the holiday for five days for the first time in the republic's history. Under the decision, the people of Azerbaijan will celebrate the date for a full week starting this year.
