TURKISH FIRM COMPLETES CONSTRUCTION OF PIPELINE DESIGNED TO CARRY AZERI GAS
Anatolia news agency, March 6, 2007
Erzurum, 6 March: Pipeline construction was completed in Shah Deniz
(Baku-Tbilisi-Erzurum) natural gas project yesterday, said Sakir Arikan, deputy director-general of Turkish Petroleum Pipeline Corporation (Botas).
Speaking to Anatolia correspondent, Arikan noted that 8.6m cubic metres of natural gas will flow into Turkey a day after the pipeline is opened.
According to Arikan, 230-kilometre pipeline was constructed in 18 months.
"We have launched test flows. We guess that Azerbaijani natural gas will reach our country within March. This project will help transport Caspian gas to world markets," he stated.
Stressing that Shah Deniz project will pave the way for Nabucco (natural gas pipeline from Turkey to Austria, Bulgaria, Romania and Hungary) and Turkey-Greece-Italy natural gas project, Arikan said, "We used to purchase natural gas from Russia, Algeria, Nigeria and Iran. This will be our fifth source of natural gas supply. We will obtain 14.4m cubic metres of natural gas (per day) in 2008 and 19m cubic metres in 2009 with this pipeline."

Aliyev congratulates nation on historic date

The Azerbaijani people celebrated national holidays in a rather low-key way during the Soviet Union times. However, after they asserted sovereignty and established an independent state upon the Soviet collapse in 1991, March 20-21 - the Novruz Bayrami (Holiday) marking the advent of spring - were officially announced holidays. President Ilham Aliyev has lately issued a decree announcing the celebration of the holiday for five days for the first time in the republic's history. Under the decision, the people of Azerbaijan will celebrate the date for a full week starting this year.
