UN WELCOMES EFFORTS OF AZERBAIJAN TO BECOME A DONOR COUNTRY
    Azertag, March 2, 2007

On March 2, Azeri Minister of Foreign Affairs Elmar Mammadyarov met a delegation led by Ms. Kori Udovicki, Assistant UN Secretary-General, Assistant Administrator of UNDP and Director of the Regional Bureau for Europe and CIS.

Congratulating the minister on the 15th anniversary since Azerbaijan became a member of the United Nations, Ms. Kori Udovicki said Azerbaijan achieved some successes in cooperation with this Organization.

Touching upon Azerbaijan's achievements in economy, successful policy, the UN official highly appreciated the proper management of oil revenues and expending these revenues for the development of the non-oil sector. She noted that due to the economic development Azerbaijan makes efforts to turn into a donor state from the country, which receives humanitarian aid. Minister Mammadyarov, in turn, said achievements of Azerbaijan in the energy field are directed to the enhancement of people's social welfare and development of education and information technologies.

Talking about large-scale regional projects implemented with Azerbaijan's initiative and participation, the Minister underlined that Azerbaijan is the leader country of the region. He said his country needs to continue cooperation with UNDP to increase its efforts for becoming a donor state.

    NOVRUZ RINGING THE DOORBELL
    Azernews, March 20, 2007

Aliyev congratulates nation on historic date

The Azerbaijani people celebrated national holidays in a rather low-key way during the Soviet Union times. However, after they asserted sovereignty and established an independent state upon the Soviet collapse in 1991, March 20-21 - the Novruz Bayrami (Holiday) marking the advent of spring - were officially announced holidays. President Ilham Aliyev has lately issued a decree announcing the celebration of the holiday for five days for the first time in the republic's history. Under the decision, the people of Azerbaijan will celebrate the date for a full week starting this year.
