ALIYEV, KACZYNSKI SIGN CO-OP PAPER
Azernews, April 10, 2007
Azerbaijan and Poland signed a joint declaration in conclusion of talks between Presidents Ilham Aliyev and Lech Kaczynski in Baku on Friday.
President Aliyev told a news conference after the meeting that all aspects of bilateral relations, including security, were discussed. He emphasized that Poland was one of the first countries to have recognized Azerbaijan's sovereignty.
"Our relations are currently developing on the highest level. Since its accession to NATO and the European Union, Poland has been supporting Azerbaijan's integration into Euro-Atlantic organizations and recognizes the country's territorial integrity."
Aliyev said Baku was ready to cooperate with Warsaw in all fields, including the energy sector.
"I believe that the Polish president's visit was successful. The essence of the document we signed showed our political intentions," the Azerbaijani leader added.
President Kaczynski, for his part, praised the outcomes of his visit and invited his counterpart to Poland.
In reply to journalists' questions afterwards, Aliyev said oil has been extracted in Azerbaijan for many decades and that industrial oil production was realized in Baku for the first time. The country's oil output will amount to 42-43 million tons this year, with the figure to hit 60 million tons in the coming years, he said.
The head of state said a surge in gas production is expected as well, which will turn Azerbaijan into a major exporter of gas to energy-hungry European markets.
"Whereas we have been able
[only] to meet domestic demand so
far, starting this year we can trans
port gas to Europe. With the full
operation of the Shahdaniz field,
Azeri gas will be exported through
the Baku-Tbilisi-Erzurum
pipeline. Gaining access to European markets meets our interests."
President Aliyev noted that the relations between Azerbaijan and Poland have historical roots.
"The House of Poland opened in Baku in 1909. Polish architects played a great role in the architectural design of the city. A Catholic church is being built in Baku. Most Catholics living in Azerbaijan are of Polish descent," Aliyev said.

HEARTS STILL AFLUTTER IN BAKU
Today.Az, March 30, 2007
Life in Azerbaijan is just beginning to get back to normal after the celebrations which followed Wednesday's 1-0 UEFA EURO 2008™ qualifying win against Finland.

Without a competitive victory in four years, Shakhin Diniyev's men had collected just one point from their previous four Group A games and little was expected of them against an unbeaten Finland side. However, Emin Imamaliev's late goal secured an unlikely victory and helped Azeris to love the national team again. In the build-up to the match, demands for Diniyev's resignation had come left, right and centre in Azerbaijan. However, having been subject to criticism following the 5-0 defeat against Poland, Imamaliev silenced the doubters with a fierce 82nd-minute drive which stopped hearts in Helsinki - and traffic in Baku.
