The UN International Atomic Energy Agency has given permission for the construction of the first nuclear research reactor in Azerbaijan.
An Azerbaijani delegation will visit the Vienna office of the IAEA on 17-29 December to learn about stages that need to be passed for the construction of the nuclear research reactor.
The director of the Institute of Radiation Problems of the Azerbaijani National Academy of Sciences and the IAEA's representative in Azerbaijan, Adil Qaribov, has told Trend news agency that the construction of a nuclear research reactor in Azerbaijan was discussed at a IAEA session in the Vienna office on 17-21 September. The construction of the nuclear reactor will start in 2009. The Institute of Radiation Problems has submitted a package of proposals on the construction of a nuclear power plant to the Azerbaijani government. However, the Azerbaijani government has yet to express its position on the issue.
The construction of a nuclear power plant was started in Soviet times in Navai, 70 km from Baku. However, the construction was halted after the Chernobyl disaster.
