AZERI PARLIAMENT GIVES GO-AHEAD TO PEACEKEEPERS' PULLOUT FROM KOSOVO
ASSA-Irada,
4, March 2008
The Milli Majlis (parliament) approved on Tuesday a presidential appeal over the pullout of Azerbaijani peacekeepers from Kosovo. The bill was backed by 87 votes, with two votes against and two MPs abstaining.
The permanent parliamentary commission on security and defense issues considered the issue on February 28 following President Ilham Aliyev's appeal and recommended to pass the bill to parliament for discussions.
Vice-Speaker Ziyafat Asgarov said he didn't see any need for discussion of the issue, noting that the change of situation in Kosovo has caused Azerbaijan to withdraw its peacekeeping forces from the Turkish contingent.
On February 17, Kosovo declared its independence which was not recognized by Azerbaijan. 37 Azerbaijani servicemen have been serving in Kosovo within the Turkish peacekeeping contingent since 1999
