Azerbaijan's president has called for increased domestic production of "strategic" food products in the face of the rising food prices in the world, the state-owned Azartac news agency has reported.
"We should try to ensure the maximum production of strategic food products in Azerbaijan," Ilham Aliyev was quoted as saying at a Cabinet meeting on 14 April. "As you know, practical measures are being taken for this purpose. Farmers have been allocated additional funds, thanks to which farmland has been expanded significantly, and corn production has been growing."
Aliyev said he was certain that Azerbaijan would be able to ensure its food security in the future.
"I am confident that all the programmes we are considering now will enable us to ensure our food security fully," Azartac quoted him as saying.
