WB EXPERT WARNS EX-SOVIET STATES AGAINST SLOW GROWTH
Assa-Irada,
10, April 2008
A number of former Soviet republics and Eastern Europe may face slower economic growth soon, a World Bank expert has warned.
The bank's chief economist for Europe and Central Asia, Pradeep Mitra, said Ukraine, Estonia, Latvia as well as Romania and Turkey had already encountered the problem.
"The same problem will emerge in Kazakhstan, Poland, Slovakia and Slovenia this year," he predicted.
Mitra said the hikes in food prices will cause increasing poverty in the ex-Soviet states. The value of the minimum consumer basket may rise 50-60% in these countries. The 5% increases in Azerbaijan, Georgia, Moldova and Albania will raise the poverty rate by 2-3%, the expert said.

NEW COACH OF AZERBAIJANI FOOTBALL TEAM SETS AMBITIOUS AIMS
Turan News Agency, 15, April 2008
"I cannot promise that Azerbaijani football team will win World Football Championship 2010, but we could pose problems to favorites of elimination group - German and Russian teams - and took away some points from them," Berty Fogts, new coach of Azerbaijani football team, said at yesterday's press conference.
Fogts said he is proud of his appointment to the position of chief coach of Azerbaijani football team. He added that it is necessary to work hard to achieve success. "But one cannot just hope for good luck. It is necessary to fight," said Fogts.
He evaded the question about the place that Azerbaijani team could take in its group. He promised that in the near future it will be difficult to win victory over Azerbaijani team.
