    ALIYEV IN KYIV FOR GAS FORUM

    President llham Aliyev of Azerbaijan had a meeting with Ukrainian Viktor Yuschenko in Kyiv, Ukrainian News Agency reports.

    During the wide delegated talks, the two sides discussed a broad range of issues involving m mutually beneficial bilateral cooperation hi the political, trade, economic, and cultural areas as well as pressing international issues, including intensification of cooperation in the framework of GUAM.

    A charter of the presidents of Ukraine and Azerbaijan, as well as a declaration on friendship and strategic partnership between Ukraine and Azerbaijan, several international agreements on cooperation in the information technology, and an agreement on cooperation on development of the civil service was signed after the talks.

    As Ukrainian News reported earlier, on January 24, Yuschenko and Aliyev discussed cooperation between Ukraine and Azerbaijan in energy security and possible cooperation between in the Odessa-Brody-Plotsk-Gdansk oil pipeline project.

    llham Aliyev also participated in the International Forum on Energy Safety in Kyiv.

    Ukrainian gas transport and oil transport systems are an integral part of the European energy policy. President Viktor Yuschenko stated at the Conference.

    Yuschenko noted that presently the matter concerns formation of a new culture of energy carriers' transit from the East to the West enabling to minimize threats of energy safety. According to him, Ukraine has been already initiating reconstruction of transit facilities available in Ukraine.

    In this context, the President noted that Ukraine owns the largest transit possibilities in Europe. The Ukrainian gas transport and oil transport networks are regarded as an integral part of the European energy policy", Yuschenko said.

    According to him, Ukraine approached the European Union with a proposal to form a common policy, including the issues of reconstructing those arteries. As a result, the EU plans to allocate USD 2.5bn in autumn for carrying out reconstruction of the Ukrainian gas transport network.

    NATION MARKS 90TH ANNIVERSARY OF FIRST ORIENTAL DEMOCRACY

    May 28 marks the 90th anniversary of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic (ADR), the first-ever democratic republic in the Orient.

    President Ilham Aliyev on Tuesday paid tribute to a monument dedicated to its establishment in the center of Baku. Hosting a solemn reception on this occasion at the Gulustan Palace, Aliyev pointed to the tremendous historic role of ADR, regarding its creation on May 28, 1918 as a remarkable development.

    The president emphasized that present-day Azerbaijan has taken its worthy place on the world stage.

    Referring to the changes taking place in the country, President Aliyev said that along with economic reforms, political ones are under way. He said Azerbaijan’s current development is related to the parallel conduct of these reforms. The economy is developing successfully and the republic’s diplomatic power is growing. Great attention is being paid to the development of education, healthcare, information technologies and other fields.

    Aliyev said Azerbaijan will fill the ranks of the world’s developed countries in the near future.
