IN 2008 FRONTIERS GUARDS DISARMED 10 ORGANIZED GROUPS INVOLVED IN DRUG TRAFFICKING

Operative –search and investigations organs of Azerbaijan detained in 2008 10 organized criminal groups involved in drug trafficking, said the head of the State Border Service Elchin Guliyev at the session summing up results of 2008.
According to Guliyev, three organized groups dealt in illegal migration.
In 2008 3,363 people were detained, including 388 frontiers violators.
34,8% of violators were citizens of Azerbaijan, 26,3% - of Iran, 19,1% – of Georgia, 3,6% - of Russia, 3,4% - of Afghanistan, 3,1% - of Pakistan, 2,8% - of Turkey, 2,1% - Iraq, 1,8 % - Nigeria, 3% - other states.
As compared with 2006 the number of frontier violators cut by 18, 4%, and in 2007 – by 6, 1%.
Eight facts of armed resistance of drug smugglers to frontier guards were noted. Four violators were killed and three were wounded when application of arm against frontiers violators.
In 2008 110 people were detained, they tried to cross border with false passports, and 47 used documents of other people; 26 people were detained when they tried to cross border without passing through passport control; 874 wanted p[people were detained.
In 2008 255 people were not allowed to leave Azerbaijan, and 105 people were not allowed to enter the country; 140 false passports were removed.
During the reported period in 529 cases smuggling goods amounting 3,042,600 manat were withdrawn. Taking across the border of 621 kilo and 200,1 gram of drugs was prevented ( in 2007- there were 309 kilo and 739,8 gram, in 2006 - 24 kilo and 601,1 gram, in 2005 - 12 kilo and 755,9 gram.) During the reported period 24, 6 tons of wild growing drug plants at15, 2 hectares were eliminated.
In 2008 was prevented taking across the frontiers: 23 fire arm, 33 pneumatic pistols, 569 bullets, 5200 bullets to pneumatic pistols, 2,729 shells, 73,194 tobacco products, 4,443 alcohol drinks, 14,598 kilo of fish, 128 kilo of caviar, 2,615 liters of petrol, 7,913 liters of diesel fuel; 25 horses, 24 of cattle, 420 small cattle, 3,749 gram of jewels, 24 of golden coins, 23,120 thousand manat, $127,646, 11.736.803 Iranian real and so on.
One Russian ship, one Azeri ship and 27 boats, and two Iranian boats were detained for violation of frontiers of Azerbaijan. 47, 8 km of fishing net illegally thrown into the sea were confiscated.
