UN Resident Coordinator Receives Special Customs Award

Baku, 23 February 2006 - The Chairman of State Customs Committee, Customs Service Lieutenant-General, Mr. Aydin Aliyev received the United Nations Resident Coordinator, UN Development Programme (UNDP) Resident Representative in Azerbaijan, Mr. Marco Borsotti.

In his opening remarks, the Chairman of the Committee spoke about the achievements of the State Customs Committee in recent years and emphasized that UNDP and personally Mr. Borsotti made great contribution to this end. According to him, due to cooperation with UNDP, Azerbaijani customs service has been brought in line with modern international standards. He stressed that the first joint project of UNDP and the Government of Azerbaijan launched back in 1999 had an extremely positive impact on the development of customs services in terms of establishing a customs data transmission network in the country.

Mr. Marco Borsotti, in his turn, congratulated Mr. Aydin Aliyev on his new appointment as a Chairman of the State Customs Committee and wished him success in his future endeavours. He agreed that the cooperation of UNDP and the State Customs Committee in the field of application of Information Communication Technologies (ICTs) in the customs system was a pioneering case and proved to be very successful. According to him, currently, UNDP jointly with European Union are helping the Government to bring the current Customs Code in conformity with the international standards as part of the newly-launched Customs Modernization Project.

At the end of the meeting Mr. Aliyev underlined the necessity of further cooperation with authoritative international organizations, especially with UNDP. He presented to Mr. Borsotti a Special Medal of the State Customs Committee "For Strengthening Customs Cooperation".

Deputy Chairman of State Customs Committee, Major-General Mr. Rza Hasanaliyev, Chief of Head Statistics and Information Technologies Department, Major-General Mr. Arif Aliyev, Chief of UNDP Azerbaijan Law-Enforcement Unit, Mr. Mezahir Efendiyev attended the meeting.
