UN welcomes efforts of Azerbaijan to become a donor country

Baku, 2 March 2007 - On March 2, Azeri Minister of Foreign Affairs Elmar Mammadyarov met a delegation led by Ms. Kori Udovicki, Assistant UN Secretary-General, Assistant Administrator of UNDP and Director of the Regional Bureau for Europe and CIS.

Congratulating the minister on the 15th anniversary since Azerbaijan became a member of the United Nations, Ms. Kori Udovicki said Azerbaijan achieved some successes in cooperation with this Organization. Touching upon Azerbaijan's achievements in economy, successful policy, the UN official highly appreciated the proper management of oil revenues and expending these revenues for the development of the non-oil sector. She noted that due to the economic development Azerbaijan makes efforts to turn into a donor state from the country, which receives humanitarian aid.

Minister Mammadyarov, in turn, said achievements of Azerbaijan in the energy field are directed to the enhancement of people's social welfare and development of education and information technologies. Talking about large-scale regional projects implemented with Azerbaijan's initiative and participation, the Minister underlined that Azerbaijan is the leader country of the region. He said his country needs to continue cooperation with UNDP to increase its efforts for becoming a donor state.
