MDGs - The new long-term development strategy

The Azerbaijan government is working in partnership with the local representations of the UN agencies.
The long term poverty reduction programme  is being coordinated by the Ministry of Economic Development in partnership with the UNDP. Individual UN agencies have provided their expertise and guidance the discussion of country-specific MDGs. For example, UNDP has provided assistance and expertise for Goals 1, 7; while UNICEF has done for Goals 2, 4 and 6; UNFPA has guided discussion on Goals 3 and 5; WFP is the leading UN agency for the nutrition target under Goal 1; and the Office of the Resident Coordinator is responsible for coordinating with the government on Goal 8.

The Millennium Project Report ranks Azerbaijan as one of the countries which can be placed on the "fast track" for achieving the MDGs(pp 50-53). This is mainly due to its success in successfully implementing its first SPPRED, and aligning it with the MDGs. The report argues that if countries such as Azerbaijan are given full donor support, they have the possibility to achieve the MDGs.

To summarise: if Azerbaijan continues on the track which it has set out on, approves and immediately starts the implementation of the new poverty reduction and development strategy, and donor coordination and support to the process continue, the prospects for meeting its country-specific MDGs are good.
