The Government of Azerbaijan and the United Nations launch a New Cooperation Framework (2011-2015)
Baku, 9 July, 2010 - The Government of Azerbaijan and the United Nations in Azerbaijan signed the next United Nations Development Assistance Framework (UNDAF), a five-year collaboration which aligns the UN prospective development activities with the State Programme for Poverty Reduction and Sustainable Development (2008-2015). Expectations are high that the role and contribution of the UN system to national development will become more coherent, effective and relevant, as well as provide better support for the government in achieving the internationally agreed development goals, including the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). The Deputy Prime Minister, Honourable Abid Sharifov, and the UN Resident Coordinator, Mr. Fikret Akcura, signed the UNDAF alongside government officials and representatives from the UN agencies. more

National Conference on pasture management
National conference on pasture management was held at the central building of the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources within the framework of the Ministry and UNDP joint project funded by the Government of Norway. The national conference was attended by representatives of relevant state institutions, international development agencies and representatives of non-government organizations. In his new role as an advocate for the poor, Antonio Banderas will set his sights on the Millennium Development Goals, a set of eight globally agreed targets that seek to halve world poverty by 2015 by combating hunger, disease, illiteracy, environment degradation and discrimination against women. more

UNDP calls for US$35.6 million to help Haitians recover and starts to collect voluntary donations
Baku, New York, January 18, 2010 - The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) is calling for US$35.6 million for immediate recovery assistance in Haiti following Tuesday’s massive earthquake. Immediate responses will include the clearing of rubble and rehabilitating essential social infrastructures, such as street repairs and electricity, to facilitate urgently needed assistance. UNDP will also carry out cash-for-work programmes to jump-start the local economy. more

UNDP Calls on G-20 Leaders to curb a full-fledged human development crisis
New York, March 31, 2009 – The current global economic crisis, which began with the severe strains on the financial and banking system in parts of the developed world, now risks triggering a human development catastrophe in the world’s poorest countries. As the leaders of the richest nations set off to London for the G-20 summit this Thursday, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) warns that those most vulnerable to the crisis are living outside the spotlight and their predicament should be addressed at the table. more
