In December 2006 World Food Programme in cooperation with the Ministry of Health and the Vishnevskaya- Rostropovich Foundation launched the 2006 de-worming campaign aimed at improving the health and intellectual development of children in districts that host large numbers of displaced persons. The VRF provided 16,000 tablets of Mebendazole 500mg required for the intervention. The campaign was the second such effort initiated by WFP since 2005, but on a larger scale given the expansion of FfE programme. According to the recommendation of the Ministry of Health, there was a need to continue the de-worming activity in order to tackle the cases of re-infestation, treat the children newly enrolled to WFP-assisted primary schools, as well as children in schools included in the WFP Food for Education expansion.
